After LHS
Lived in Lawrence for 10 years after graduating from LHS, where I worked at Weavers Department Store and at KU in the Purchasing Office, Speech Department and History Department. I was married to Dewayne Springer for 10 years. That ended in divorce, but the good thing that came from it was my daughter, Jerri.

Employment
I'm still using those secretarial skills that Miss Gauthier and Mrs. Groh taught me years ago. I occasionally take dictation, but mostly use a Dictaphone now. I've worked for the past 26 years at Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation as corporation secretary. We are one of 18 nonprofit agencies in the state of Iowa that receives government, state, county and city funds as well as donations to use to administer programs to low-income families and individuals. One program that most people would recognize is Head Start.

Hearth & Home
In 1978, I met my current husband, Jerry, when he came to Iowa over the 4th of July weekend to a hog roast. He proposed to me over the phone two days later, and we were married in September...one of those love at first sight, whirlwind romances that is still going strong after 29 years. Besides our daughter, Jerri, we have a son, Wesley. Our two children have blessed us with seven grandchildren, ranging in age from 1 to 14 years old. We live in rural Decorah, which is in the northeast corner of Iowa. We are 60 miles one way from the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and 60 miles the other way from Wisconsin. We have some cold, snowy winters. It's a beautiful part of the country and I love it here. I try to make a trip back at least once a year to Lawrence to see my parents. Lawrence has really changed over the past 40 years. I guess that is progress. But it has gotten too big for me.

The Other Stuff
I am a 40-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. I know there are some former Jobs Daughters out there who were classmates. Because of my activity in Eastern Star, I was elected by the state organization to the Board of Directors of an Eastern Star nursing home here in Decorah. I'm in my second year of my third five-year term on this board. I also had a two-year appointment as a grand representative from Iowa to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Two years ago, I made a trip there...a beautiful place where I'd like to go back and visit again. In addition, I still use the skills I was taught back at Central Junior High to do a lot of sewing for my seven grandchildren. About four years ago I got an embroidery machine, which I have used to put many designs on clothes for them. Because I love sewing so much, I have a dream of opening an affordable fabric store one day. We don't have many in our area and have to drive an hour and a half or more to get to one.

My Memories of LHS
Loved Mr. Kassinger, the marching band and being a flag swinger. I wasn't in one of the popular groups at LHS, but I fondly remember some very close friends. Will never forget learning about JFK's assassination while there. And also will never forget science class. To this day I am not a reptile person.
