After LHS
I attended KU for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Air
Force where I served as an air traffic controller for four
years, including a tour of duty at DaNang Airfield, RVN. After
leaving the Air Force, I returned to KU and completed both an
undergraduate and a law degree there. Throughout my KU studies
I also worked for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as a
deputy sheriff.
Employment
After graduating from KU, I served in several capacities as a
prosecuting attorney. My first position was as an assistant
attorney general in Kansas, which I did for several years. In
1984, I ran successfully for Douglas County District Attorney
(DA), narrowly defeating Mike Glover (class of '65), and was
re-elected DA in 1988. During my second term as DA, I accepted
a position with the United States Attorney's Office. During my
time there, I was primarily an assistant U.S. attorney in the
Criminal Division. Later, I was also appointed to serve as the
U.S. attorney for the District of Kansas from 2001-02. In
January of this year, I retired from the Department of
Justice, having served my final four years as the First
Assistant U.S. Attorney. I've now become a registered
investment advisor and have created Flory Financial Consulting
to provide investment advice and financial planning.
Hearth & Home
Donna Hewitt (class of '66) and I were married in 1969 and
will celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary in September. We
live on a mini-farm in the Lone Star area with a large garden
and a well-stocked fishing pond. Our oldest daughter, Louise,
lives in New York City and is an aspiring actor. Our youngest
daughter, Lisa, lives in Columbus, Ohio, where she works in
advertising and her husband attends graduate school at Ohio
State.
The Other Stuff
I'm enjoying a relatively stress-free life of gardening,
fishing and part-time investment advisor work. Fortunately,
the vast majority of my "hopes" have been fulfilled.
My Memories of LHS
My fondest memory, without a doubt, occurred in Mr. Downing's
journalism class. That was when I first met the cute chick
with a New York accent who would become my partner for life. |
