After LHS
Earned a bachelors degree in education from KU; a real estate license in 1988; a CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) designation in 1993; and a SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors) designation in 2003.

Employment
Have been a commercial real estate broker in Lawrence since 1988. Worked for Stephens Real Estate from 1988 through 2000, and joined the national firm of Grubb & Ellis in 2001.

Hearth & Home
Am currently married to Kelvin Heck, and have two daughters: Laura Bittenbender, Lawrence; and Kyra Bittenbender, Houston. I also have three step-daughters: Maggie Borojourdi, New York City; Gina Heck, Kansas City; and Katie Towsen, Houston, whose daughter (and my first step-granddaughter), Wagoner Towsen, is 3 months old.

The Other Stuff
When not working, I do lots of volunteering for area business, economic development, and social service organizations. Currently I serve on the board of trustees of Cottonwood, Inc., a Lawrence-area service organization for persons with developmental disabilities. In addition I was a member of the Leadership Lawrence class of 1991 and the Leadership Kansas class of 2000; and received the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Athena Award in 2004 and the Lyn Smith Distinguished Service Award from Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center in 2006. What I still strive to do? Make a difference.

My Memories of LHS
Fond memories include skipping Friday gym class our senior year with Becky Heck and Patty Buehl (we were gym aides in the sophomore class) to go get milkshakes at Allen's in Patty's brand new red Mustang, and not getting nailed for it as long as we brought one back for Barbara Maxwell; sitting next to the snake case in Stan Roth's biology classes sophomore and senior years; and Mary Derrough's junior English class. She was incredibly tough, but I learned to love both literature and grammar and, also because of her, I can probably still diagram a sentence. It's too bad we didn't have competitive girl's sports in our era...Title IX came too late for us...and that it rained graduation night and we had to use the Field House.
