After LHS
Attended KU immediately after graduating from LHS. After 1-1/2
years of playing cards and pool in the Student Union, left
Lawrence to serve in the U.S. Air Force (USAF). On July 6,
1968, while attending USAF technical training school in San
Angelo, Tex., I married LHS'66 classmate Linda Ruehlen. We
celebrate(d) our 40th wedding anniversary this year.
Employment/Hearth &
Home
My first and only Air Force duty assignment took us to
Okinawa, where we spent three years. The first of our three
sons, Scott, was born there in 1971. I was discharged in 1972
and returned to Lawrence to try the college thing again. It's
amazing what can happen when you don't go to the Union between
classes: I graduated in 1976 with a BS in Business
Administration.
Our second son, Justin, was born in Lawrence
Memorial Hospital in 1975. I worked at Hallmark Cards full
time while going to KU, where I naturally thought I would stay
for 30 years, becoming a supervisor, then a manager, and
eventually retiring from there. However, Linda had other
thoughts. Being a second shift housewife with no life
whatsoever did not appeal to her. So we (I) went out into the
cold cruel world and immediately fell into the exciting world
of insurance.
In 1977, our youngest son, Kyle, was born in
Olathe Hospital. I worked in Overland Park for 10 years with
Allstate, then moved to Milwaukee in 1986. In 1990, I left
Allstate and we moved to Indianapolis to work with Viking
Insurance. In 1991, we moved back to Wisconsin with Viking,
this time to Madison. In 1994 we left Madison for Charleston
(Summerville), S.C., where I currently am agency sales manager
for AIG Agency Auto. Our only remaining career goal is to stay
in South Carolina.
The Other Stuff
We are blessed to have all three of the boys near us here in
South
Carolina. Scott, the computer guy, is married to Becky;
Justin, the
aquarium (all things fish) guy, is with Amy; and Kyle, the
cabinetmaker/guitarist/student, is still searching. As well as
being an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, I
play a little golf and do a lot of yard work. Most of all, I
really want to be the best grandpa in the world, but so
far...no grandchildren.
My Memories of LHS
I remember about every day at LHS. I wasn't the best student,
not the most social guy, didn't date much, and forget the
athletic thing. But I generally had a good time...smokin' in
my '56 Chevy before school; Friday night lights; after-game
dances; backed in at Allen's Drive-In; hanging out with Joe,
David, Rick, Bob and Gary...those were the days! Have no real
bad memories. Heck, I even enjoyed Miss Ruttan's class. |
