At LHS
English teacher, Fall 1962 through Spring 1966
Employment
Completed a PhD at KU in 1973. Began teaching at the
University of Florida in January 1971 and retired from there
(university professor—emeritus) in 2002 after 31+ years.
Worked with teacher preparation of English teachers
(middle/high). The last 17 years at Florida, I worked with all
graduate students who completed a BA in English and then
completed their master's degrees under my supervision (about
400 of them). Was assistant editor of The English Journal
from 1990 to 1994, and president of the Florida Council of
Teachers of English. Received several teaching awards.
Hearth & Home
Wife, Marthann, died in October 1996. Daughter, Jennifer, is
married and has three children: 17, 13 and 8. She lives
outside Asheville, N.C. Son, Jeff, is married and lives in
Palm Harbor, Fla. The alpha female of my home is my
17-year-old cat named Sammy.
The Other Stuff
Sing in two church choirs. Help lead grief support groups at
church. Listen to classical music, read and walk five miles a
day, six days a week. And I like to stay in touch with former
students including those from LHS. Still to do? Learn to keep
my mouth shut in meetings. Try to be more patient with those
who over-generalize.
My Memories of LHS
My memories of LHS center on the fact that I was blessed by
the presence of bright, young people who were willing to
learn. The key was to find a good idea and then get the hell
out of the way. My negative memories of LHS are few. I do
remember searching my room and the library because of a fake
bomb report. And I still regret the deaths of four former
students in Vietnam. |
